Welcome!

I'm Carol Malach

At my age I wear many hats:  wife, mother, grandmother, sister,  aunt, friend, CEO & Founder, RYT  yoga teacher, golfer, and avid reader.  And I've recently added "author" to the list!

I've written Where the Silence Ends: Echoes of a Childhood, along with my friend Dr. Kenneth Jones.  I'm excited to share some highlights of this journey.

Where the Silence Ends:
Echoes of a Childhood

COMING JANUARY 20, 2026!

Where the Silence Ends: Echoes of a Childhood chronicles the life of Dr. Kenneth A. Jones, who faced the harsh realities of mental illness and family violence during his upbringing in 1960s Brooklyn. With a mother battling mental health issues and a father entrenched in denial, Ken's childhood was steeped in secrecy and emotional turmoil. To cope, he built protective walls around his pain. Despite these obstacles, Ken's resilience guided him toward a brighter future. His academic journey led him from Colgate University to the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he emerged as a compassionate physician dedicated to advocating for marginalized voices in healthcare.

This journey, as told to his longtime friend Carol Malach, peels back decades of silence and echoes to reveal a raw, courageous account of hardship, survival, and the transformative power of trust. It invites reflection on family dynamics, the significance of empathy in medicine, and the resilience and strength required to overcome life's challenges.

A story of trauma and triumph, Where the Silence Ends: Echoes of a Childhood reminds us that while the past shapes us, it does not have to define who we become.

Q. What gave you the idea to write this book?

A. Ken and I were talking on the phone one evening in 2016. He mentioned that his patients had no idea about the weight he was carrying on his shoulders. That surprised me. What weight was he carrying? Answering that question was the spark for our nine year adventure.

Q. Nine years? Why so long?

A. I spent more than 3 years conducting interviews with Ken and members of his family. And then lots of writing, rewriting, and research.  I even attended the Colgate Writers' Conference in 2019 to focus on completion. In 2020 I sent excerpts to various publishers and got little response.  So I packed the pages away and set our dream of sharing this story aside. In the spring of 2025, I was energized to revise and finish this book, and Ken and I decided to self publish.

Q. What was the most challenging part of telling Ken's story?

A. I had no idea what I was getting into!  His story is heartbreaking yet I was amazed at his resiliency. Why didn't he just give up? I had to be careful as we delved into his memories that he was not overwhelmed, and I had to bite my tongue when I was upset on his behalf...I needed to let him speak, uninterrupted.

Q. Did your friendship with Ken change as you worked together on this project?

A. We became much closer - he was baring his soul to me, trusting me with long held secrets. I was shocked as he shared his experiences, but gained so many insights into who he is today. I love this person!

Q. What's next?

A. I am looking forward to my next book. I love the writing process routine, exploring new ways to share thoughts - I'd like my next story to be a mystery or historical fiction.  Those are my two favorite genres.

WHAT ARE READERS SAYING

This wonderfully, well-written book by Carol Malach will stay with you long after you have finished it.  The last time I read such a moving book was The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wells.  The books are similar in theme and explore how some people can move beyond the horrors of childhood.  Where the Silence Ends: Echoes of a Childhood will have you cheering Ken on as he shares his journey for the first time.
